"Go back to your cave!” That exclamation is one of many insults transferred from the people of Sparks to the citizens of Ember in The People of Sparks, by Jeanne DuPrau. After traveling out of the dying city of Ember, Ember’s citizens find themselves on the face of the Earth for the first time, and soon reach a city called Sparks. The three mayors of Sparks decide that the Emberites will be allowed to stay in the Pioneer Hotel, on the edge of the city, but to repay the food and shelter, they will work for Sparks. Will Doon’s bravery and inventiveness be enough to cool rising hatred between the citizens of Ember and the people of Sparks?
