Imagine an underground city with a stock of supplies slowly running out. Then imagine that no one in the city knows that they are underground, and that most don’t think about leaving. Lina Mayfleet and Doon Harrow, the main characters of The City of Ember, by Jeanne DuPrau, are in that city, and must decipher exit instructions chewed and nearly digested by Lina’s sister Poppy, while attempting to escape from the greedy mayor. Blackouts in Ember are becoming more frequent, and the generator is close to falling into pieces. Will Lina’s bravery and creativeness be enough to save her city?
