            “Stay back human. You don’t know what you’re dealing with.” That threat is transferred between Captain Holly Short of the Lower Elements Police and the child genius Artemis Fowl, the main character of Artemis Fowl, by Eoin Colfer. To replace the money from one of his father’s illegal business contractions, Artemis utilizes the Internet, and soon finds a man who will take him to a fairy; in exchange for 20,000 American dollars. By first poisoning the already drunk fairy, and then restoring her magic, Artemis walks away with detailed pictures of the Fairy Bible, or the Book; and uses the knowledge within to kidnap the elfin officer Captain Short. Artemis is a cunning and malicious being, and thus manages to exchange Captain Short for one ton of authentic gold. Although Artemis isn’t a very compassionate person at first, he begins to develop a heart in later sequels.
